Hutt night market begins in Margaret St on December 6

MARGARET STREET is the location for this year’s night market and it will start on December 6.

The market will be held on 10 consecutive Thursdays from December 6 until February 7, running from noon to 8:30pm.

The approval has been given by the City Development Committee after it considered consultation on three possible of locations in the Hutt CBD.

After being held last year in Laings Road, the councillors decided it was not close enough to the CBD, so have moved the location to Margaret Street, above.

The new location requires infrastructure spending of about $40,000 by council.

City development divisional manager Gary Craig said the market should attract more visitors to the High Street area.

“Laings Road was favourable because it didn’t block any roads, however it didn’t draw people to the CBD,” Mr Craig says.

“The intention is to run it on a regular basis, hopefully every week.”

Mayor Ray Wallace is supportive of the plan, saying it would be a great economic drawcard for the city and central retail zone.

“It’s encouraging more people to come into High Street,” he says.

“It adds a vibrancy to the area, and we’re all for it. We just don’t want to upset retailers.”

City development committee chair Roger Styles says it bridges the gap from Westfield Queensgate, right, to High Street.

“It’s been resolved and it’s all going ahead,” Mr Styles said, following the meeting.

The consultation document stated that the option to have Margaret Street as a location was favoured most by responses from local retailers.
