Community umu for Wellington

Oct 8th, 2012 | By | Category: Radio News

PACIFIC AND Maori communities could have an Umu or hangi pit in a Wellington park if a city council advisor has his way.

Pacific Advisory group deputy-chair Anthony Leaupepe (Lee-oh-peh-peh) says that many Pacific people in Wellington live in council flats or houses with little land and they want a place to cook their food in a traditional way.

AUDIO: Community Umu
FW: There’s a barbeque…
LW: …they do their things.
DUR: 14 secs

B/A: Anthony Leaupepe says that a community umu could also be an attraction for the city and contribute to its image as the cultural capital of New Zealand.
