All I want for Christmas is to live through armageddon

Nov 28th, 2012 | By | Category: Latest News, News

PLENTY of people around the world believe an ancient Mayan text which predicts the end of the world on December 21 this year.

So just in case they are right, Bats Theatre is throwing an early Christmas celebration.

The Island Bay Loners’ Doomsday Christmas Carol Sing-a-long is an attempt to spread some joy before the impending doom.

The production begins with a John Key puppet announcing that Christmas in New Zealand is being held early this year.

Puppet Key puts a Kiwi spin on George Michaels’ Last Christmas before handing over the stage to five loners from Island Bay who are getting together to celebrate their final Christmas.

Director Uther Dean says the show is a light-hearted Christmas comedy that captures the festive spirit, but also has some dark humour.

Co-producer Adrianne Roberts says the idea came from co-writer Cherie Jacobson, who has always wanted to do a Christmas-themed production.

“She wanted to involve the audience. She loves carols,” says Ms Roberts.

Traditional Christmas carols will be sung alongside modern ones, and a mix of both.

The show runs from November 29 to December 15 with tickets at $18 or concession tickets at $14.

However, Bats theatre is running a special. If you bring a can of food along, then you can buy a ticket at concession price. All food will be donated to City Mission Church.

“It’s a community-focussed show, so it’s good to give back to the community, too,” Ms Roberts says.

Birthday Boy

Come December 21 there will be plenty of people partying to see the world out with a bang, especially one Plimmerton teenager.

Sam Baxter (right) will be turning 16 on the day the world is meant to end, but he does not seem to mind.

“Everyone gets to die on my birthday, party it up.”

He is to sit his learner’s licence on his birthday, despite having not studied (just in case it’s a waste of time).

He has also refused to buy anyone Christmas presents. “If we survive, I might buy some,” he says.

He says the Doomsday Christmas Carol Sing-a-long at Bats sounds like a good idea.

“It’s pretty sweet. Everyone celebrating together.”

All Sam wants for his birthday or Christmas present is tickets to Christchurch to visit his girlfriend who moved down there recently.

“We’re celebrated my birthday on the 8th so she can come.” Celebrating early, like everyone else.
