Get your Obama Burger here and look forward to four more years
WELLINGTON Obama fans can celebrate their man’s win right here in Petone by ordering an Obama Burger from Uncle Mike’s Kansas City BBQ restaurant.
“We probably sell about 25-30 Obama Burgers a week.”
Inspired by Obama’s Hawaiian roots, the burgers are flame-grilled with pineapple, bacon, cheese and teriyaki sauce and garnished with lettuce, onion and tomato.
Mr Oxley says the restaurant gets its fair share of American ex-pats and visitors from the US embassy, but Kiwis also enjoy the tastes of Kansas (Mr Oxley’s state of origin).
“It has a bit of a kick to it. Most can handle it, because it’s a medium spice,
my sauce and rub. But there are a few Kiwis who can’t hang,” he says with a laugh.
He uses traditional methods of slow-smoking the meat at low temperatures and his own spice rubs and BBQ sauces.
Mr Oxley brought his cooking talents here from Los Angeles, where he opened his first BBQ restaurant.
He has been paying close attention to the US elections.
“My family are still over there, so I am interested.”
He thought it was going to be close but is pleased that Obama is getting a second term.
Mr Oxley said he was just hoping it would be a fair election and that there would be no “dirty tricks like during the Bush election.”
