Hundreds of Wellingtonians gathered at Waitangi Park to get into the Christmas spirit, with the city’s annual Carols by Candlelight event.

The festivities included singing carols, free phone booths for calling Santa, and lighting the Christmas tree.

Santa ditched the traditional sleigh and reindeer, opting for the Westpac rescue helicopter instead, much to the delight of the many children present.

The stage is set up, as the crowd awaits the big man, and the lighting of the Christmas tree.

Phone booths allowed those with last minute Christmas wishes to give Santa a free call, thanks to Telecom.

Nixy, the Phoenix mascot, entertains crowds singing carols and dancing with them.

Three little reindeer eagerly await Santa and the lighting of the tree.

Santa arrives on the Westpac rescue helicopter.

The moment the crowd has been waiting for finally comes, and the tree is lit.
