Waitangi Day celebrations buzzing on the Wellington waterfront

WELLINGTONIANS flocked to celebrate Waitangi Day with a show on the waterfront organised by the Wellington City Council and Port Nicholson Block Settlement Trust.

There were events for all the family including kapa haka and musical performances, flax weaving, storytelling and a late-night screening of the movie Boy in Waitangi park.

Organisers were relieved to see clear skies as the outdoor show attracted thousands of onlookers.

Ladi6, a Canterbury-born soul singer, headlined the day of free entertainment.

Local band Tomorrow People entertained the crowd with their acclaimed sunshine reggae style of music

Stalls celebrating Waitangi Day sold Maori-designed jewellery, clothing, temporary tattoos and food.

Medical staff keep an eye on people diving into the harbour.

Ladi6 and her band kept the songs flowing  into the evening.

The night finished with a screening of Boy at Waitangi Park. The film is directed by Wellingtonian Taika Waititi.
