Multi-Fest a colourful celebration of Lower Hutt’s diverse cultures

MULTI-FEST (previously Race Unity Day) is how Hutt City celebrates the many cultures and traditions that make up its community.

Multi-Fest, celebrated last weekend, was a chance for Hutt citizens and visitors to experience the diversity in their midst.

Flags from all nations decorated the walls of the Horticultural Building in Lower Hutt while the smell of foods from around the world wafted around the hall.

Other things on offer on the day were many different types of music, dance, art and clothing.

Organisations set up to support people from other countries, such as Interpreting New Zealand, had stalls at the event.

One of the highlights of the day was the fashion show, hosted by Sadhana Shrestha, in which people showed off their traditional garments.

Clothing from Scotland, South Africa, Columbia, the Philippines, Nepal, India, Bhutan, Fiji and Poland were shown off on the catwalk.

A few notable people  featuring in the fashion show were  Lower Hutt Mayor Ray Wallace and the previous mayor, David Odgen. Both were sporting kilts and tartan, representing their Scottish origins.

Another model was the wife of the deputy high commissioner of  South Africa.

MP Trevor Mallard made a speech about the cultural diversity in Lower Hutt.

The event is run annually by the Hutt Multicultural Council with the support of the Hutt City Council and the Race Relations Office.
