Petone’s miniature railway back on track

Mar 25th, 2013 | By | Category: Front Page Layout, Latest News, Most Popular, News

THE miniature railway track in Petone has been re-opened by Lower Hutt Mayor Ray Wallace.

Proud members of the Hutt Valley Model Engineering Society and lots of happy children tested out the new tracks on the day with rides on the miniature trains.

The society recently completed the rebuilding of its raised track for the miniature railway, which had been in need of a revamp.

The railway has been owned and run by the society for almost 50 years.

The society also owns two locomotives, and on the day, members brought a few of their own along for the special occasion.

President of the Hutt Valley Model Engineering Society, Claude Poulsen, gave a speech about the history of the track and about the rebuilding project.

Mayor Wallace also gave a speech in which he said he remembered coming to the railway track as a child. He then cut the ribbon and took the first ride around the track.

Sounds of little trains going around the tracks and their high-pitched whistles could be heard along Petone beach.

The track is near Hikoikoi Reserve in Petone, and normal running time of the railway is on Sundays from 1pm-4pm, cost for children is $2.

  1. great range of photos expressing the enjoyment of the day. Thanks, P

  2. As a committee member of HVMES, I was delighted to discover this post, which I did by following up on your article published in Hutt News last month. I compliment you on the accuracy of your reporting and the quality and range of the photographs.

Incidentally, I am the owner and driver of the “early american” Virginian Type locomotive model shown taking the Mayor, Ray Wallace and Hutt City Council Parks and Gardens representative, Shelley Donoghue, on the official opening train ride.
