LUSH-LASHED, gilt-covered beauties and good humour were on show at Cuba Street’s Fringe Bar on Friday night.

The Burlesque Rocks show was staged by Miss Burlesque New Zealand, which aims to promote and develop the burlesque industry in New Zealand.

Spokeswoman Crystal Mischief says the night was all about showing off the stars of this form of striptease.

Burlesque has been enjoying a renaissance for some years now, and Crystal says New Zealand has kept up with this trend.

“Passionate talent is busting to thigh heights, she says.

Australian burlesque exponent Minsky Malone from The House of Burlesque in Melbourne entertained the audience with her more subtle striptease and sense of humour.

“We are so lucky to have an international artist such as Minsky Malone to come, share and encourage the art into the community,” says Crystal.

Before the rock started to roll, MC Danny Dangerously introduced to the crowd Miss Burlesque New Zealand 2013, MisRed Delicious, last year’s winner, Willow Noir, and this year’s Miss Congeniality, Honeysuckle.

MisRed Delicious announced that she was giving away part of her Miss Burlesque New Zealand prize to Honeysuckle, who will now get to go to a burlesque programme in the United States, where she will receive training and a chance to perform at The JumpinJupiter House of Burlesque in St Louis.

Minsky Malone says there is a great pool of talent in New Zealand, “and it is always pushing itself forward; I enjoy coming back”.

Willow says burlesque artists’ performances are getting “harder, better, faster, stronger and they are making their parodies unique and fun”.
