Evolve youth service all ready for the next big shake

evolve400TOPWELLINGTON CENTRAL youth service Evolve is all stocked up with at least two days’ supplies for clients in the event of a severe earthquake.

After the 6.5 quake on Sunday the Evolve team took the opportunity to update their emergency supplies.

Items in their survival kit include water, a portable gas cooker, baby supplies, toilet paper and batteries.

The only difficulty has been fitting the items in the available storage.

“Ideally we want to be able to cater for all the people who come through, and who may be stuck here for a couple of days,” said  Evolve youth worker Simon Mareko, right and below.

“Twenty people, about there.”

Evolve provides a community space and health and social services for 10-25-year-olds.

INpostEvolveIt shifted from its Eva St location this year to level 2 of the James Smith Building, on the corner of Cuba and Manners streets.

One waiting room needed some earthquake aftermath attention.

“We had a window broken in one of our waiting rooms,” said Simon (left), but that will be fixed within the week and Evolve remains fully functional.

Even with one room temporarily out of order, Evolve still has more space than at its previous premises.

“The old place was much smaller and here we can definitely do more.”

The former building, in Eva Street, met a fraction of the earthquake requirements, said Simon.

“I haven’t heard how the old space held up during the quake.”

“One of the conditions we insisted on in the contract when we got this lease was that the building had to meet at least 70-80% of earthquake-strengthening requirements,” said Simon.
