WELLINGTON North badminton is buoyant after the club’s junior side earned a silver medal at the New Zealand champs last month.

Under-17s coach Maggie Lee said the club was becoming a powerhouse on the Wellington badminton scene.

Her team travelled to Auckland in October and finished second behind Auckland.

Ms Lee said the team played five games and won four, losing their final match 12-4.

“The kids were stoked. Everyone was glad we took second place,” she said.

“Auckland beat us reasonably comprehensively. Sadly they were just better on the day.’’

The Wellington North team finished third in the North Island championships in July.

Ms Lee coaches top players Alyse Derby and Jacob Morgon, who won positions on the national under-19 team that played in Australia and Tahiti this year.

“They did really well this season,” she said.

“Over the past three years Alyse and Jacob have been training with the senior teams, which has improved their game considerably.”

Ms Lee said Wellington North’s most improved junior, Pingkan Polak, who has played since she was 8, had an astonishing year in which she won eight titles.

“She pretty much won everything she played. Pingkan is pretty keen and has been doing really well.

“We consider her a senior even though she is still a junior, because she is so good.”

Ms Lee said the club’s goal for next season was for the senior side to win the Slazenger Cup in North Harbour.

They came second this year.
