Hundreds of santas turn out for ‘KidsCan’ fundraiser

SantaMAINSANTA is never held up by a bit of rain, and neither were hundreds of Wellingtonian’s in this year’s Santa Run around the waterfront.

Participants paid an entry fee, donned their Santa suits and ran 2.1km from Frank Kitts Park to Waitangi Park and back to raise money for the charity KidsCan.

The dubious weather on Wednesday this week did not seem to pose a problem with around 600 Santa’s participating this year, an improved turnout on last year according to organiser Ross Weddell.

Mr Weddell said there was a good mix of people with families getting involved.

“It was good to see parents taking their kids for a bit of a run around.”

NewsWire was greeted with several “Ho, ho, ho’s” from the jogging Santa’s, many of who were running with small children dressed as elves.

A good pace was maintained by most, despite the hefty outfits.

Santa in training, Jan Morris, said the run was hard work but worth it for a good cause.

“It’s not the ideal running gear but everyone is loving it. It’s a pretty worthwhile event,” Mrs Morris said.

The financial results from the fundraiser will be known next week. The event was part of 16 Santa runs around New Zealand.
