YOU could be the next Birdman Wellington Champion as long as you are prepared to fly off the end of Taranake St Wharf on Monday.

The capital’s annual Birdman Competition is happening Monday as part of Wellington Annivesary Weekend, and is one of the highlights of the Summer City Festival.

The object of the event is to dress up in a crazy costume and jump off a specially designed Airstrip.

Organiser Martin Wilson, from Capital Productions says the event is always well attended, and they have had some awesome costumes in the past.

“There have been many good cardboard planes, one had solar panels on it last year,” he said

Others have included a Kiwi, and recycled costumes which Mr Wilson says are always good.

“About half the entrants just turn up on the day, which is what we have encouraged people to do,” he said.

The family day out starts at 11am with the BirdKidz competition, and there will be many other activities throughout the day.

There will also be two music stages and stalls selling New Zealand crafts all along the Wellington Waterfront, but the Birdman event itself will be held on the Taranaki St Wharf.

Groups participating this year will include fundraising groups, something that the organisers have encouraged to help raise awareness for their charities.

Although the weather is forecast to be changeable for this Monday, the event will be staged regardless, Mr Wilson said.

Wellington City Council is helping support the event.
