SHIRLEY Porteous (above) has been at Greenacres School just over year but is bringing about change both in the school and community.

She says creating a new vision for the school along with a newIMG_0155

“Creating a new school logo was pivotal,” she says.

“Last year we did a major community consultation. The community was ready for a change.  They had a well loved principal before I came, but were certainly ready for a new direction,”she says.

The principal is hoping to modernize four classrooms with funding from the government’s Five Year Plan scheme, saying there hasn’t been any major property development since the school opened.

Updating the school’s furniture and technology is something Ms Porteous wants to get done in the near future.

She says the school has to find funding and this Saturday’s gala will be a big help.

The principal says the school couldn’t operate without community support.
“We have an amazing events committee made up of parents who run the gala, and we have huge community support.”

She says they have some amazing sponsors, donating all sorts of things from Phoenix shirts to ferry tickets and teeth whitening vouchers.
“I’ll have to put in a bid for that,” she says with a smile.
