PHOTO ESSAY: Going backstage at Grease, the musical

Grease 300x400 pxFrom make-up to curtains down, the high-energy numbers to the ovation of the audience – NewsWire reporter MATTHEW LAU was allowed access backstage to capture a theatre production from a different perspective.

This photo essay has been compiled after spending a day behind the scenes across two shows at Wellington Musical Theatre’s production of Grease, which was held at The Opera House from 16-26 July.

The 12 shows were a success, meeting the ticket sales target of executive producer Michael Highsted.

Based on the 1978 American musical romantic comedy movie, Grease is a well-known story and is considered one of the greatest musicals of all-time.

Audiences were interactive throughout the shows, and some even made the effort to dress-up 1959 style.  It was smiles all round from everyone involved.

The cast was made up predominantly of Whitireia Performing Arts students.  The day was made up of cheers and tears (but mostly cheers).
