PHOTO ESSAY: Vibrant, beautiful Big Beach in Makena

Created with flickr slideshow.

BIG BEACH, also known as Makena Beach, is part of Makena State Park on the south coast of the Hawaiian island of Maui.

Like many beaches in Maui, Big Beach has a dangerous shore break, but the waves are deceptively powerful there.

Every year people get into trouble in the water, or break their necks under the power of the waves.

However, the waves make for great body boarding and other water activities, for those who know what they’re doing.

While in Maui recently, I spent a day at Big Beach capturing the beauty and vibrancy of the spot.

As the longest undeveloped white sand beach on Maui, it attracts both locals and tourists.

Hidden from the road by kiawe tree covered sand dunes, it gives a wonderful feeling of being in the wilderness.
