Workers urged to jump on the pay equity bandwagon

Oct 30th, 2014 | By | Category: Radio News

UNIONS want other service industry workers to join the fight for pay equity, following an historic court ruling this week.

Aged Care worker Kristine Bartlett asked the judge to rule on the issue, arguing her wage of just under $14.50 an hour, was not the same as men with the same skills in different industries, and the judge agreed.

John Ryall from the Service and Food Workers Union says the ruling could pave the way for other professions dominated by women, such as disability support workers or home support workers, to join the fight against discriminatory wages.
