Christmas has not come early for many Wellington stores this year with shoppers leaving their gift buying to the last minute.

The holidays are just around the corner and  sales have begun to pick up, however compared to last year the silly season has got off to a slow start.

“New Zealanders are the latest Christmas shoppers I have ever seen,” says T2’s assistant manager Kitty Hart.

Ms Hart says the Australian tea company, which only recently opened in New Zealand, tried to encourage shoppers to come in early.

“But they wouldn’t budge.”

She thinks perhaps our smaller population means people don’t feel the pressure to avoid last-minute crowds.

“In Australia, you know you’ve got a bun fight on your hands,” she says.

Sales at Farmers department store and pyjama shop Peter Alexander have also been slow up until this week.

Peter Alexander’s Lambton Quay manager Stephan Johns says he is surprised at how late people have left their shopping this year.

“But it’s picked up quite a bit at the moment so it’s been good,” he says.

Pandora jewellery store owner John Cooper also says the shopping season is lagging this year.

“So far it’s been a little bit later than last year.”

But not everyone has been hit with a late wave of shoppers.

Independent book store Unity Books says they noticed an early surge in sales which hasn’t slowed down.

Co-owner Tilly Lloyd reports sales are up 20 percent compared to last year.

One of Kirkcaldie and Stains’ fragrance saleswomen, Cathy Doherty, also says people have been coming in early this year but they are buying less.

“I don’t know if they’re spending as much as last year,” she says.
