EASTERN Hutt School will be holding celebrations to mark its 100th birthday in October.

The Labour weekend event will include an official cake cutting by former student Eileen Smeaton, who turned 100 this year.Julie Henderson 400

She will cut the cake with the school’s youngest pupil.

A flag will also be hoisted for the first time in 26 years, on a flagpole which was donated by the current students as a centenary gift.

Eastern Hutt’s last flagpole was dismantled in 1989 because it was unsafe.

Students held a market day to raise funds for the new flagpole.

Principal, Julie Henderson says the celebrations will be an opportunity to acknowledge 100 years of educating generations of students in the Hutt Valley.

Festivities will begin with a meet and greet evening on Friday, followed on Saturday with a ceremony.

The ceremony will include student performances, displays of historic photographs and the planting of 10 trees to represent each decade of service.

The cake cutting and flag raising will also be held on Saturday, with guests having an opportunity to interact with the pupils after the ceremonies.

Celebrations will conclude on Saturday night with a dinner and guest speakers at the Petone Working Men’s Club.

Julie says there has been a lot of interest in the celebrations.
