GOLD medal Olympian Joseph Sullivan says inspiring children to achieve their dreams is an “epic” experience.

Sullivan attended the inaugural Wellington Regional SportsFest at the ASB Sports Centre, where about 2200 year 5 to year 8 students compete in a range of sports.

He says it is the first time he has attended an event on this scale as a part of the Sports Ambassador programme.

“I like getting involved with the kids. At some bigger schools it’s not that easy but at smaller schools I play games with them. I generally get beaten by the younger ones,” he says.

Sullivan says his favourite part of visiting schools is seeing the enjoyment children get from sport.

“That’s why I pass around the medal when I visit schools, instead of just letting them look. I think it would be cool to inspire even one of them to get their own,” he says.

He says he enjoyed playing a variety of sports when he was younger and had many idols, including Sarah Ullman and Hamish Carter.

His main idol, however, was Sir Edmund Hillary.

“He was really inspiring, he wasn’t amazing at anything but he worked so hard to get what he wanted,” he says.

Sullivan earned a gold medal in the double-scull rowing event at the London 2012 Olympics, and is now working as a firefighter.
