Iwi welcome refugees but focus stays on their own

Sep 7th, 2015 | By | Category: Radio News

WELLINGTON IWI Te Ati Awa are welcoming news that the government is to take an extra intake of Syrian refugees, but say their main focus is still on their own people.

The European humanitarian crisis put pressure on the New Zealand government to play its part and offer refuge to some of the thousands of Syrians fleeing the warzone in their country.

Te Ati Awa spokesperson Wirangi Luke says while welcoming the refugees, he is worried about the strain on housing resources here.

He says housing their own people is still their main priority
