RIPPA rugby is more than just sport for the Porirua’s Tairangi Typhoons.

Coach Lucho Arca says the kids get discipline out of the game.

“They know they have to study. They learn to play the game, follow the rules. They want to excel,” says Arca.

Tairangi took part in the inaugural Wellington Regional Sportsfest on Tuesday in Kilbirnie.

Thirteen kids represented the team from the school of about 150 pupils.

“They’re very keen, they practise every day at lunch,” Said Arca during a break in play at ASB Sports Centre.

“I do it for the kids. I want them to have good memories from primary,” says Arca, who has been coaching for 30 years

On the field, the energy levels were high and the kids were excited to be there.

“It’s fun and tough,” ten-year-old Lautasi Iosefa said before the pool match against Samuel Marsden Collegiate.

Samanoa Euta, 11, said likes to play hard like his rugby idol All Black Julian Savea. “He doesn’t just play good on one day.”

They came first in their pool, taking out Marsden with an impressive 50-5 victory, along with Kilbirnie School, and St Anthony’s A.

A 15-20 loss to Seatoun School followed, but Tairangi went on to win their final match against Discovery School from Whitby.

Fotu Tuitama came from Porirua to watch his daughter and support the team. “He’s a good coach,” he said of Arca.

Tuitama said he was glad to see the kids getting out of their comfort zone, and having a fun day out.

The Wellington Regional Sports Fest involving 10 sports was organised by Wellington City Council and run over two days at various stadiums and grounds around the city.
