WATCH: Anti-TPP protesters arrested in Lambton Quay

Sep 17th, 2015 | By | Category: Latest News, News

Dozens of protesters were arrested on Lambton Quay on Tuesday in an attempt to seize TPP documents.

The group calling themselves ‘Show Us Your Text’ clashed with police lines in an attempt to enter the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade building.

“We issued a demand that the Government release the text of the TPPA to us by August 31st. We told them if they didn’t we’d be conducting a citizens initiated search and seizure,” says, group spokesperson, Lizzie Sullivan.

Police formed a chain around the locked building, pushing back protestors who, in groups of two or three, took it in turns to try to shove their way in.

“We’re trying to get into that building to retrieve the text for ourselves and show New Zealand what it’s all about.”

As the day progressed, protesters moved to the road, conducting a sit in and obstructing traffic.

“We think that civil disobedience is a vital part of any functioning democracy,” says Ms Sullivan.

Police asked individual protesters to move, but when they refused they were dragged away and arrested one-by-one.

Stuff.co.nz  report that Senior Sergeant Bud Butler stated that none of the 26 arrested would face charges.
