CONTROVERSY surrounding Waitangi celebrations in the north, was not evident at Waitangi events in Porirua at the weekend.

More than 30,000 visitors packed the city’s Te Rauparaha park on Saturday.

Deputy Mayor Ana Coffey says the local  festival is unique, celebrating mana whenua  Ngati Toa, and local entertainers.

She’s praising volunteers from the Porirua Arts Council who gave their time to ensure the event was a success.

The Deputy Mayor says it is important to celebrate Waitangi Day and embrace diversity in all its forms.
