Four new classes are being built to cater for a 15% increase in student numbers at Karori West Normal School.

An increase of 77 students since late 2014 has taken the roll to 511 students.

One of the new classrooms constructions has just finished, with three more still in construction.

The increased number continues to add to the school’s diversity.

Principal Janice Shramka says there are many different cultures attending the school.

“What we like about this end of Karori is the socio-economic and ethnic diversity is just amazing, to have just about every nationality represented in our school.”

Shramka is concerned about talk of the decile system being potentially scraped in a proposal by Education Minister Hekia Parata.

Each child would be allocated with funding rather than the school itself, in contrast to the decile system assessing its socio-economic surroundings.

“It certainly is an interesting concept and really the devil will be in the detail.

“I worry about how they’re actually going to make those judgements.”

On Saturday March 19, the school held its annual fair.

“It is the fundraising event of the year.”

“We continue to be a lot more rigorous in applying for grants to make up that short fall and looking at what other fundraising activities we can enter into.”
