The Porirua community is throwing its support behind Titahi Bay kayaker Marty McDowell as he prepares for the Rio Olympic Games in August.

McDowell, 28, qualified for Rio after coming second to Australia’s Daniel Bowker in the K1 1000m race in Adelaide.

Te Rauparaha Arena has created a programme of support for Marty  that will run for the 100 day lead up to the games.

The programme includes members at the arena, running, cycling and swimming the equivalent of the 11,889 kilometre distance from New Zealand to Rio.

Every kilometre one person completes is tracked and then at the end of the week the totals are collated.

The programme is being supported by the Porirua City Council and Recreation Porirua.

Organiser Phil Waggott says they’re off to a great start.

“In the first week we did over a 1000 km which was phenomenal,

Everybody’s jumped on board with this, and it seems like quite a good way to support our athletes,” he says.

With over 100 members and 87 days until the games, they’re well on their way to achieving this goal.

People wanting to support the Porirua athlete can register at Te Rauparaha Arena.
