Onslow College 1st XV will play in their first Premier 3 final in over 10 years against Naenae College this weekend.

This year Onlsow won all but one of their games in the round robin and last Saturday beat Hutt Valley High School in the semi-final.

Both captain and coach said the team’s communication needed work on as they dominated the first half of the semi-final but only led by 3-0 at the break.

Naenae College are the only team to have beaten Onslow in this year’s competition (19-14) when the two sides met earlier in June.

“We will have to move the game away from trying to engage them [Naenae] in the tight five, said head coach Dallas Paotonu.

“They are a big pack so we will have to use our mobility.”

Onslow College has not been renowned for its rugby having only been promoted the Premier 3 last year.

That team made the semi-finals and won the Fair Play Cup off arch rivals Newlands for the first time in over ten years.

With last year’s coach leaving along with many good players, new coach Dallas Paotonu has had to rebuild the team with many new players.

“It’s been an experience. I coached at Wellington College for a long time. I’ve coached a lot of representative rugby but I found coming here a real experience.

“Last year’s team was a very strong side and they lost a lot of good players, having to rebuild this team with year 11, 12’s and 13’s has been really good. ”

Onslow Captain Grishin Muller said the feeling of making the final was something else he’d never felt before.

“We’ve got a real good culture, and it was really hard fought. ”

“All of the year 11s have stepped up, they foreshowed a bit of maturity and learned from the older players.”Field Across the top
