Bike fans can fix, ride and compare their bikes in a free event at Strathmore’s Kahurangi School on Saturday thanks to Wellington City Council.

Free Bike FixUp is one of the ways the council is supporting people to ride bikes more regularly, says Paul Barker, Planning Manager of Network Improvement.

“People can come and fix their bike, pick up some riding skills, and share their knowledge with other people in their neighbourhood,” Barker says.

The ‘Bike FixUp’ workshop will help people learn how to maintain and care for their bikes thanks to The Mechanical Tempest team, a community bike workshop based in Abel Smith St.

For people who are curious to try an electric bike, rental service Switched on Bikes will be there with a collection of bikes for riding.

“Providing an event like this is one of the ways we are reducing barriers to cycling and encourage people to ride more often,” says Baker.

Learning and improving bike skills including bike jumps is another option for attendees under the guidance of Pedal Ready, a Greater Wellington Regional Council cycle skills programme.

For anyone with a bike they no longer use or want, Rebicycle will be there to collect them and save them from ending up in landfill.

Rebicycle is a community-led initiative that collects and refurbishes unwanted bicycles before gifting or loaning them to newly settled refugees in Wellington.

“Bikes are a great way of preventing isolation and keeping the community in touch with each other,” says their Facebook page.

This is the first community based Bike FixUp and follows the success of the similar events held at Victoria University, on Oriental Parade and at Basin Reserve.

There will also be free coffee, fun activities and giveaways happening over the afternoon.

More information is available on the council Facebook page for the event.
