Local bar Hashigo Zake has been brewing beer in the spirit of the current US election.

The two beers, ‘I’m Whit Her’ and ‘Make Brown Ale Great Again’ are named after Hillary Clinton and Donald Trumps’ campaign slogans.

General manager David Wood brewed the brown ale and is hoping their namesakes won’t sway customers’ beer choice.

“Because it’s associated with Trump, they can’t bring themselves to order it.”

“I brewed the brown ale so I’m a little gutted the wheat beer is well outselling the brown ale,” he says.

The bar gained a reputation for showing coverage of the election after showing all three presidential debates.

The result was a large turnout for the day of the election.

Americans and interested Kiwis have packed-out Wellington’s cult beer bar Hashigo Zake for a US election watching party.

The Taranaki Street bar is showing election results on three TV screens and a specially set up computer screen.

“We had people in at 11 o’clock and we officially open at midday so there’s been a huge amount of interest.”

David expected business to pick up even more as the results come in later in the afternoon.

“The bar’s pretty packed out at the moment which is unusual for two thirty on a Wednesday afternoon and we’ve heard a lot of people are planning on coming down 3o’clock- 4o’clock as the real results start coming in” he says.
