The Wellington Film Society are looking forward to beginning their 71st year of film screenings next month.

The Paramount has provided entertainment to Wellingtonians for almost a century and for the last 12 years it has been home to the Wellington Film Society.

The group was formed in 1945 and began screening films one year later.

Current President Chris Hormann joined the group about 10 years ago.

“I wanted an outlet for films that weren’t being shown in mainstream cinemas and to actually watch films with people who loved film for a bit more than just the entertainment value,” he says.

“The entertainment value is great but to look a little bit more behind the films and about the directors who are filming it.”

Chris is joined by 500 other members who congregate at Paramount every Monday from March to November for 33 specially selected films.

The films have a varied genre and range from modern independent films to the 1920’s silent era.

He says when it comes to selecting a cinema to screen films for the society, Paramount’s location and history is a perfect match for members.

“The Paramount is dedicated to showing films that are outside the mainstream, they show independent films a lot more than other cinemas in Wellington,”

“I guess it’s that ethos that works well with the film society”.
