A Newlands resident has won the New Zealand Business & Parliament Trust Prize for her essay on Question Time.

Post-graduate student Holly Blackler (22) was surprised when she got an email telling her she has won the 2016 prize, which amounted to $1500.

Blackler says her professor Stephen Levine put her essay forward for the prize.

“Knowing that your professor believed in you enough is pretty great,” she says.

The essay was a research project about an aspect of Parliament she was interested in while she interned for MP Ruth Dyson.

“I was fascinated with Question Time.

“So what I ended up doing was a comparative analysis between our Question Time format and international formats. What makes it unique and what’s consistent,” she says.

Blackler is working on her master’s this year and is determined to work for the Treasury after her studies.

“I applied for another internship starting next year but I think they were looking for more third years while I’m post grad,” she said.

“They’ve said no this time but I’m going to keep trying.”

Blackler is a former Newlands College student and left with an excellence in NCEA Level 3.

She celebrated her achievement by going out to dinner with her parents.
