A fire broke out in a high rise building in Central Wellington around nine o’clock this morning.

The cause of the fire is currently unknown, but at this stage the fire service is not treating it as suspicious.

It has been confirmed that there are no injuries.

The fire broke out in an air conditioning unit on the 14th floor of the Williston Centre on Williston Street in Wellington’s CBD.

The acting area manager for fire and emergency services in Wellington, Dave Key, said the fire had potential to be worse.

“I think the quick reactions and efforts of the crew averted anything getting worse than what it already was.”

An investigation is underway as to the cause of the fire.

Fire and emergency services cordoned off an area of Victoria and Williston Street and asked commuters to avoid the area.

The Williston Centre was expected to be handed over to the owners later in the day.
