Intersection of Herd Street and Oriental Parade, site of the proposed cycle way

A cycle way on Oriental Parade has been proposed by the Wellington City Council.

The cycle way would stretch from Herd Street to Freyberg Pool.

The proposed cycle way is part of a council plan to connect the Eastern Suburbs to the city.

Opponents of the cycle way are concerned that it will be a repeat of the Island Bay cycle way, widely acknowledged as being dangerous and unnecessary.

It could also remove up to 35 car parks on Oriental Parade, an area already lacking in car parks.

The council says it will decrease stress on the length of footpath at peak times.

The plans for the cycle way are public and are ready for consultation, and the project should be completed by 2019.

Funding for the cycleway will be split three ways between Central Government, National Government and the New Zealand Transport Agency.
