Students are celebrating the success of their lobbying efforts, following a massive drop in public transport fares yesterday.

The Greater Wellington Regional Council voted 12 to one to drop fares for students and disabled people.

The move comes after the Victoria University Students Association gathered nearly 2000 submissions to take to the council on the issue.

They say the discount will save students travelling from Upper Hutt $20 a week.

Barbara Donaldson, chair of the Sustainable Transport Committee says without the association’s submissions and campaigning, the discount wouldn’t have happened at all.

Meanwhile Student Association President Rory Lenihan-Ikin says he’s happy the campaigning has paid off.
