Kate Miller, Zealandia’s marketing administrator says twilight tours will run over the summer season.

New Twilight Tours have been launched at Zealandia.

Day and night tours are so popular they have had to squeeze in the new service, says Kate Miller, Zealandia’s marketing administrator.

“During summer we have high demand for our Zealandia By Night tours, but our supply is limited,” says Kate.

The sanctuary has been so busy visitor figures have jumped from 97,000 to 125,179 over the past two years.

“Twilight Tours occur before Zealandia By Night and will only run over the busy season.”

“We’re also looking at changing how our shuttle runs. These get quite popular over summer,”  Says Kate

“Our Zealandia By Day tours are popular with tourists and our Zealandia  By Night tours tend to sell out.”

Kate says tours run at about 70-80% capacity during our busy season, hitting 90% sometimes.

Two new Takehe are another new addition to  Zealandia’s  Sanctuary.

“Most of our wildlife projects are ongoing, but our latest are two new Takahe, Nio and Orbell, who our conservation team have been looking after over this spring, will be the first Takehe chick hatched in the sanctuary and in Wellington.

“This is an important project, as our Takehe help raise awareness of the plight of these rare birds.”

Kate says people can find out more about Nio and Orbell on their website and Facebook page.

Volunteers  are an important part of  keeping  Zealandia running and there are opportunities that come up.

“Over summer, there are different opportunities, such as count Kiwi calls,” says Kate.

“This is awesome fun,” says Kate, who did it last summer herself.

She says it is hugely important  to help estimate little spotted kiwi numbers in the valley.

“Often the best volunteer opportunities aren’t advertised externally, as they’re so popular with existing volunteers.

“Volunteering at Zealandia is an awesome thing to do, with a massive variety of opportunities.

“You end up doing things that will help you meet cool people and give you amazing stories to tell, whilst gaining new skills and getting to help out a good organisation.”

Zealandia became a Wellington City Council controlled organisation in September last year.
