Proposed zip-lines and walking trails

A scenic zip line on Hawkins Hill is planned to be the newest tourist attraction for Wellington, subject to public consultation.

Karl Ratahi and business partner Mark O’Connor realised there was a lack of adventure tourism options in Wellington, and decided a scenic zip-line in the southern hills would be the perfect solution.

“Mark and I are avid mountain bikers, we’re always biking and walking and going up into the hills and just thought that while it’s really nice for us to go and look at all the wicked views around Wellington ,” says Karl

“There wasn’t really an opportunity for people from out of town to get up into the hills.”.

The site on Hawkins Hill provides views of the Wellington city and harbour, as well as the Brooklyn wind turbine, with a mixture of walking and four separate zip-lines being used to showcase the scenery.

Part of the plan for the zip-line is to restore native bush in the area through extensive planting and care in conjunction with Zealandia Wildlife Sanctuary, so the zip-line can also show the unique plants and bird life of Wellington.

“Some zip-lines in New Zealand and around the world are just in pine trees, it’s a different attraction,” says Karl

“They’re not adrenaline based zip-lines, they’re user friendly, we want to capture the market of very young children up until grandparents so whole families can go and do this.

“We’re not about creating an adrenaline rush for 5% of the population. You can do that in Queenstown.”

Recently Karl and Mark did high profile zip-line for Tiger Beer in Taiwan, as well as helping set up EcoZip adventures, a zip-line on Waiheke Island.

Customers will be transported to the site in vans from the central city.

The partners presented the plan to today’s City Strategy Committee, which agreed to go ahead with public consultation before and after Christmas.
