Jackson Pollocks and Andy Warhols will share space with some of the Pacific’s best in 4000 square metres of new Toi Art space opening in Te Papa this week.

Kate Camp, Te Papa communications manager says Toi Art was built for the public to view artworks held by Te Papa on behalf of all New Zealanders.

“We’ve got a really deep, broad collection of New Zealand art, art from the Pacific and international art, we’ve got Jackson Pollocks, Andy Warhols and so on,” says Camp.

“Our collection and national scope sets us apart from the City Gallery, and this is a brand new amazing space full of commissioned work, as well as all the archives of the national art collection that we hold,” says Camp.

The new two storey space is opening with exhibitions from the Pacific Sisters, a collective of artists/activists working in New Zealand for the past 26 years, as well as jeweler Lisa Walker and conceptual artist Michael Parekowhai.

“The opening exhibitions have a real strong focus on New Zealand artists, Pacific artists and also women artists, because we know that’s an area where a lot of collections aren’t as strong as they could be, Te Papa included,” says Camp.

Some exhibits will stay up for six months, others for over a year.

The opening show has a focus on socially conscious and conceptual art.

“I think it’s really important to us that we challenge our audiences, and art is a great way for people to encounter new ideas and to see the world through someone else’s eyes.”

“It’s important that we continue to challenge our audiences and ourselves.”

Camp says that it took 10 curators a couple of years to select the artists and works to exhibit in the opening show.

The Toi Art gallery space opens to the public at 10am Saturday March 17 on levels four and five of Te Papa.
