Eastbourne remembers the sinking of the Wahine

The 50th anniversary of the sinking of the interisland ferry Wahine was marked this week by the Eastbourne community.

Wahine ran aground just off the Eastbourne coast during tropical cyclone Giselle on April 10th 1963

Of the 51 deaths that occurred, 49 were lost on the Eastbourne coastline.

The tragedy was marked with a dawn service, survivors and family walked through Muritai school library where students studying the disaster have built a collection of artefacts and stories.

Lower Hutt Mayor, Ray Wallace, says many locals at the service had been involved in the rescue operation on the day.
