Concussion recovery Linked with mental health

May 5th, 2018 | By | Category: Radio News, Sport

A Wellington sports scientist says concussions can exacerbate mental health problems like depression.

It has just been confirmed Chiefs back Sam McNicol will miss the entire Super Rugby season, another setback in a career beset by recurring concussion symptoms.

Team Wellington Football Club sports scientist James MacAodhagáin says concussions create issues for players away from the game as well.

He says the nature of the injury and impact it has on one’s brain makes it particularly dangerous.

A new US study has found children that play tackle American football before the age of 12 are more likely to develop CTE symptoms earlier.

Meanwhile concussion was included in the AFL Player’s Association injury fund earlier this year.

James MacAodhagáin says good progress has been made in the field but more is needed.
