New arena for Wellington on the cards

A new 12,000 seat arena is on the cards for central Wellington.
The Wellington Regional Economic Development Agency presented a report to the Wellington City Council advocating such a project.
They’ve been told the lack of an indoor venue the size of Auckland’s Spark Arena or Dunedin’s Forsyth Barr Stadium means the capital misses out on hosting events.
Rapper Kendrick Lamar recently announced live shows in those two cities, with Wellington left off the schedule.
Manager David Perks says hosting significant concerts should be a string to Wellington’s creative capital bow.
He says the report shows the business opportunity is there and the next step is evaluating sites to assess what a new arena would cost.
