Support not permission needed for bilingual towns

Sep 25th, 2018 | By | Category: News, Radio News

Iwi wanting to embrace te reo are being told they need the support not the permission of their local councils.

Rotorua tribe Te Tatau O Tearoa were successful in making their city officially bilingual in August last year.

Chairman Te Taru White, says they didn’t ask permission to pursue their language, but he agrees having council support is important especially around issues like signage.

He says Rotorua’s looking to normalise te reo Māori in the city by 2020.
