LISTEN: Residents unsettled by abandoned building in Mount Cook

Oct 9th, 2018 | By | Category: Latest News

Mount Cook residents are frustrated with the time it’s taken to develop an empty site on the corner of Tasman and Rugby Street.

The site has been earmarked for the building of a new Chinese Embassy but that’s not likely to happen for five years.

The hectare of land is home to a disused public swimming pool which closed in 2007. The remains of the Wellington Boys Institute building is a favourite playground for vandals and graffiti artists which is waiting for the Chinese Government to begin building.

Resident Lester Chin says he’s previously boarded up the doors to stop people breaking into the building because the council would not step in.

Meanwhile, Council spokesperson Richard MacLean says it’s the responsibility of the site’s owners, the Chinese Government to maintain.
