LISTEN: Travelers assured over electronic border searches

Oct 9th, 2018 | By | Category: Latest News

Your smartphone or tablet won’t be searched by Customs unless they have reasonable suspicion you’re up to no good.

The updated Custom and Excise Bill came into effect this week, giving Customs the ability to demand passwords for laptops and phones and fine travellers 5000 dollars if they don’t comply.

Customs spokesperson Terry Brown says travellers’ devices are only searched if Customs officers reasonably suspect them of containing proof of criminal activity.

Mr Brown says cause for concern could be forged or stolen travel documents, unusual travel patterns or uncooperative behaviour.

He says it’s not ordinary travellers but criminals who should be concerned.
