MultimediaguyWhitireia Journalism School – it’s where you begin your career in multimedia journalism.

The school – New Zealand’s largest – operates from the Cuba St campus in central Wellington, a great location that allows students to be close to news generators like Parliament, the courts and the 20 media outlets which have offices in the capital.

Whitireia is New Zealand’s leading multimedia journalism education centre and the only tertiary institute with its own live news website, NewsWire, where students’ stories, photos and videos are published.

The site averages 30,000 hits a month and is linked to major news website Scoop. Students’ work is viewed all over the country, which certainly helps with employment opportunities.

Three journalism programmes are available at Whitireia, the Certificate in Multimedia Journalism, the National Diploma in Journalism (Multimedia) and the new Diploma in Radio Journalism, the only one of its kind in the country.

Certificate in Multimedia Journalism

This Level 4 one-semester certificate starts in early February and is a broad introduction to journalism practice, where various elements of media publication, broadcasting and professional writing skills are taught.

It’s an ideal programme to complete before studying the National Diploma in Journalism (Multimedia).

This programme is not an entry qualification for employment in news media.

National Diploma in Journalism (Multimedia)

Carl_Self Portrait-10cmThis is the main programme offered by the school.  It takes 28 students each year and starts in June, running through to the end of March the following year.

The unusual timing of the course ensures graduates enter the media employment market without competition from the other journalism schools, which graduate in October/November.

This is the qualification media employers look for when hiring newcomers to the industry.

Students become thoroughly familiar with the convergence of print, internet, radio, digital still pictures and video. The basic skills of journalism (reporting and writing) are learnt along with the various delivery platforms.

Diploma in Radio Journalism

This new programme – the only one of its kind in New Zealand – starts in early April and comprises one semester taught on campus, followed by a 12-week internship in a radio newsroom.

Graduates will know how to report stories with audio, edit radio news packages, do live crosses, and produce long-form documentaries.

With its focus on broadcast reporting and writing, audio recording and editing and voice training, this is the ideal programme for anyone wanting to enter radio and television journalism.
